The drainage and devegetation that occurs on grouse moor shooting estates must be stopped due to the resultant intensification of flood events. The economically poor productive uplands which naturally receive higher rainfall totals would best serve society if they were sustainably kept to slow the flow. This is also extremely important in order to mitigate against extreme drought. NatureScot warned this year that within two decades Scotland my experience a nine fold increase in extreme drought. Much of the upland areas that are managed as grouse shooting estates have been identified as being at-risk areas that are more vulnerable and have more extreme drought events that could by 2040 last up to three months longer than present. The need for reform in upland management is urgent and returning to nature-rich future in the uplands will bring considerable benefits.

I think that all owners of land should be held responsible for flood mitigation measures in proportion to the contribution their land makes to the river system. Grouse moors are large and are located high in catchment areas, therefore they are net high contributors.

It is time to change the way we use our uplands. For the sake of climate action we need to rewild, not up burn Heather and kill predators for grouse shooting. The sport has had its day.

It surely must be beneficial for these grouse moors to be more efficiently managed to help stop the flooding and reduce the impact of fires. And surely that will benefit far more than those who go to shoot the grouse which must be a far better thing. And if the grouse moor owners aren't willing to do this then they are denied a licence. Period. And the land turned over to be better enjoyed by many more and returned to be a much better environment for humans and nature in its many ways.
