That Parliament congratulates Scotland’s oldest purpose-built cinema, the Hippodrome in Bo’ness, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary on Sunday 11 March 2012; notes that the anniversary will be marked with an afternoon of free entertainment in the style of the venue’s 1912 variety programmes, which will include screenings of comedy film shorts with live musical accompaniment by the Gladstone’s Bag quartet, usherettes in original 1912 costume and performances from the local Barony Players and the Bo’ness Amateur Operatic Society; further notes that the celebrations will continue into the Sunday evening when the Hippodrome screens the classic Ealing Studios comedy, The Ladykillers, directed by Alexander Mackendrick, who was born in 1912, when the Hippodrome first opened; recognises that the evening will also include the premiere of a new trailer for Hippodrome 100 made by young people at Forth Valley College who are studying video and sound production as part of their BA Media and Communications and HND courses; acknowledges that the Hippodrome’s creator, Louis Dickson, was a local man who was considered to be a far-sighted entrepreneur and impresario and who engaged the architect, Matthew Steele, who was considered visionary, but is largely overlooked, to realise his dream of building Scotland’s first picture palace; commends the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust, Falkirk Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Regional Screen Scotland and the Bo’ness Townscape Heritage Initiative for collectively seeking to ensure that the Bo’ness Hippodrome will have an exciting future entertaining citizens from Bo’ness and beyond for many years to come.

That the Parliament congratulates Westquarter Wildlife Group (WWG) on securing £107,553 from the Big Lottery Fund Community Spaces Scotland scheme, which it considers will, in partnership with Falkirk Council, transform the overgrown and neglected Westquarter Glen into an accessible, safe and attractive community green space and enable its use for recreational, environmental and educational purposes; believes that this work will increase the confidence of the local community and the number of people in the area who are physically active, improve their health and create training and employment opportunities for members of the local community; understands that an estimated 12,000 people from the local area will benefit from the project, and wishes WWG every success for the future.

That the Parliament congratulates Central Scotland Road Safety Partnership, which includes Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service, Central Scotland Police, NHS Forth Valley and the Scottish Ambulance Service, on what it understands was the success of its recent week-long Safe Drive Stay Alive initiative at the MacRobert Arts Centre, University of Stirling; understands that more than 4,000 teenagers from throughout the area attended; notes that victims of road traffic collisions and families affected by such incidents joined emergency service personnel to take part in what it understands was a hard-hitting road safety event, which gave teenagers the opportunity to witness an enactment of a fictitious crash involving young people and hear frank and open accounts from a range of people, including victims, bereaved families and emergency service personnel; hopes that, by allowing them to hear from people affected by road traffic collisions, the teenagers will follow simple advice on how to drive more safely; notes that Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service attended 116 road traffic collisions in 2011 in which nine people died and 111 serious injuries were sustained, with 28 serious casualties in the 17 to 25 age group, and hopes that, by attending a performance of Safe Drive Stay Alive, young people will see for themselves just how devastating the effects of a road crash can be.
