That the Parliament recognises Adult Leaners’ Week, which runs from 14 to 18 May 2012; congratulates USDAW and its union learning reps (ULRs) who are involved in promoting Adult Learners’ Week in their workplaces all over Scotland; welcomes the involvement of Morrisons, Tesco and Lightbodys of Hamilton; commends the activities of ULRs who will be encouraging union members to participate in new learning opportunities; recognises the commitment to literacy and the introduction of the Six Book Challenge, which will encourage union members to read more as ULRs give away hundreds of free books and help encourage union members to sign up to read six books and record their reading in a diary, with the aim of supporting and encouraging new and emergent readers to start reading for leisure, and considers that this is an excellent way to introduce learning into workplaces.

That the Parliament congratulates the trade union, USDAW, on securing more than £200,000 in compensation for the 103 former employees of the Scottish sweet manufacturer, New McCowan’s Ltd; notes that McCowan’s went into administration in September 2011 and ceased trading in October 2011, resulting in the loss of 103 jobs; recognises that USDAW fought hard on behalf of staff for a protective award as it understands that the company failed to consult with employees before making them redundant; praises USDAW for the support that it has shown to the former employees of McCowan’s, and hopes that those who have been made redundant are successful in finding new employment.

That the Parliament congratulates Cumbernauld College on being crowned joint winner of the JICS TechDis OASES 2011 Award, which it considers prestigious, in recognition of the college's inclusion and commitment to equality; praises the college for developing its Equalities Tool, an intranet-based database to allow staff to monitor student attainment, particularly those with declared disabilities, to ensure that they receive the support needed; understands that the college faced stiff opposition from other education centres throughout the UK and Ireland to win the award; notes that it was highly commended for engaging students of all abilities; understands that the Equalities Tool assisted the college in receiving an exemplary HM Inspectorate of Education report earlier this year, which stated that the college was leading the way on issues of equality, and finally wishes the management, staff and students well in future endeavours.

That the Parliament congratulates the QHotels chain on winning the 2011-12 AA Eco Hotel Group of the Year award; notes that the group owns the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld; welcomes QHotels’ commitment to green initiatives, which, it understands, has seen a reduction in energy consumption at its hotels and an increase in the use of local and sustainable products; understands that QHotels was recently awarded a Green Tourism Business Scheme accreditation as a result of the group's effective recycling programme, which includes the introduction of a green champion at each hotel and the launch of a carbon-offsetting scheme for guests and conference organisers; praises managing director Michael Purtill for his leadership, and hopes that the hotel group will continue to carry out its commitment to green initiatives in the future.

That the Parliament notes with concern the news that New McCowans is to close its operations at Stenhousemuir with the loss of 103 jobs; considers that antiquated administration and bankruptcy laws have not protected the workforce; understands that redundancy payments will be made by the taxpayer-funded redundancy payments board (RPB); notes that, even if the workers win any legal fight with the company, it will still be the RPB that will settle any monies owed to the workers; believes that the company has not shared information with the workforce nor consulted it in relation to the financial situation at New McCowans and that this is unacceptable and disrespectful to the workers who now find themselves looking for new jobs; supports an appraisal of, with a view to changing, the law that allows workers to be treated in this way, and wishes the workers at New McCowans well in seeking new employment.

That the Parliament congratulates those who campaigned against the construction of a telecommunications mast near Eastfield Primary School in Cumbernauld; recognises the time and effort invested by members of the parent council and others from the local community who fought against the mast’s construction; welcomes the decision of North Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee in rejecting the proposal; notes with regret that the developer has chosen to go against the decision of the planning committee and what it considers massive local opposition to appeal the decision, and urges the Scottish Government to do all in its power to ensure that telecommunication masts are not built near any school in Scotland.
