That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Industrial Preservation Trust on what it considers to be its admirable efforts in protecting Scotland’s industrial heritage; believes that industrial preservation is important and notes with regret the amount of rare, unique and irreplaceable buildings, machinery and other items lost over decades of neglect; emphasises what it believes to be the need to promote an understanding of Scotland’s pivotal role in the industrial revolution; asks the Scottish Government to commit to improving the preservation of Scotland’s industrial heritage, and urges it to consider supporting the Scottish Industrial Preservation Trust in its ventures.

That the Parliament congratulates The Glasgow School of Art on obtaining a grant of £122,500 to establish the reason for the city having produced so many successful contemporary artists; believes that the school of art and its world-class facilities have played a substantial role in what has been described as the Glasgow miracle, and welcomes the opportunities that the grant provides to investigate the evidence of the last 30 years in order to unlock some of the secrets of the Glasgow miracle and to build on current successes.

That the Parliament wishes the Scotland team well in the World Schools’ Debating Championship being held in Dundee between 16 and 26 August 2011; recognises the strong track record of success by Scottish teams in debating on the world stage at both school and university level, and further recognises the life skills that debating helps develop such as self-confidence, rigour of thought and the ability to develop structured intellectual argument.

That the Parliament recognises the hard work of Japanese students at the University of Glasgow who, along with the Clean Glasgow Campaign, staged a clean-up of the west end of the city; notes that, despite what was considered to be terrible weather, the students gathered 25 large sacks of litter to say thank you to local residents who had generously donated to the Glasgow for Japan appeal; further notes that the students have raised a total of £10,000 for the relief fund since March 2011, and applauds the ongoing efforts of the Clean Glasgow Campaign to make Glasgow a better place to live, work and visit.
