Background Info

Edinburgh has been named as one of a number of 'Smart Cities' and is part of the initial roll-out of 5G technology.

However, months ago, I discovered information about the potentially serious health effects of 5G telecommunication signals. Upon further research, I became convinced of the health risks to human life and the environment.

I have included two  examples of such information in this petition. Many other studies are also available.

The first example is a  report entitled: ‘Peer Review of the Draft NTP Technical Reports on Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation’.

https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/about_ntp/trpanel/2018/march/peerreview20180328_508.pdf

On pages 46 & 47, (of the Peer Review Report) under Final Conclusions, it states, Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation Studies in Rats at 900MHz, “clear evidence of carcinogenic activity” were found indicating a clear link with their exposure to cell phone radiation and cancer.

The 2nd example is an article entitled: ‘Scientist Appeal for 5G Moratorium’ - https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5b8dbc1b7c9327d89d9428a4/t/5cb0fe5471c10bbec7485641/1555103319224/International+Appeal+-+Stop+5G+on+Earth+and+in+Space.pdf

The article sets out why more than 180 scientists from 36 countries are calling for the roll out of 5G to be stopped and highlights concerns that ‘5G will massively increase exposure to radio frequency (RF) waves’.

Both of these examples are well referenced with links to other relevant reports.

My petition relates to the implementation of a moratorium on 5G Radio-Frequency Radiation.

I am concerned that the present Safety Guidelines set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) have been deemed obsolete by hundreds of scientists and health professionals throughout the world.

I am also aware that there is an increasing push for Smart systems, meters, autonomous vehicles, ‘Industry 4.0’, and ‘The Internet Of Things’, which are all underpinned by a range of 5G signals which creates their interconnectivity.

As 5G technology is effective only over short distances, it is poorly transmitted through solid material.

Many new antennas will be required and full-scale implementation will result in antennas every 10 to 12 houses in urban areas.

With the ever more extensive use of wireless technologies, nobody can avoid being exposed.

On top of the increased number of 5G-transmitters (within housing, shops and in hospitals), it is estimated that there will be 10 to 20 billion connections to refrigerators, washing machines, surveillance cameras, self-driving cars and buses.

Taken together, these have the potential to cause a substantial increase in the total, long term Radio Frequency-Electromagnetic Field exposure for everyone.

We need to clarify if there are any health risks with this form of electromagnetic radiation before we go any further with investment and implementation.

I am asking the Scottish Government to support a 5G moratorium and contact the WHO to challenge their position on the safety guidelines regarding the health and environmental effects of exposure to static and time-varying electric and magnetic fields in the frequency range of 30Hz-300 GHz.

In doing so, the Scottish Government should cite the ever-increasing numbers of scientists and health professionals from around the world who have clear evidence that non-ionizing radiation does contribute to various illnesses.
