Background Info

I consider this action to be necessary because I lost my 13 year old son very suddenly in April 2017, due to a previously undiagnosed, hidden rare condition called AVM. AVM is an abnormal collection of veins and arteries, resulting in something similar to a blood clot. Blood is forced through this abnormal junction until it eventually bursts, causing a bleed. My son had this condition in the brain. It was totally asymptomatic and we had no idea that he had this condition. We only discovered it after he had a brain bleed, and by then it was too late to treat or save him. I call on the Scottish Government to offer brain and body scans to all neonates in Scottish hospitals. I appreciate it could be costly and not every parent will want their baby to be scanned, but surely it is worth it if a hidden or rare condition can be detected and treated? If my son had been offered a brain scan at birth, the condition he had could have been detected and potentially treated and he would still be with us now. This is a lifesaving measure that should be offered to all parents of neonates and possibly to parents who have another valid reason to request these scans. This measure needs to be taken to save lives and highlight the need for more research into rare and hidden conditions.
